This weekend, the Dallas Cowboys will be traveling to the LA Coliseum to face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. At 8:20 PM, Cowboys fans all across the country will be huddled around our televisions to witness the first game coached under recently signed Head Coach Mike McCarthy. In the off season, Dallas decided to move on from longtime head coach Jason Garrett. This happens to be a move that I believe is almost 5 years overdue. During his ten-year career as a coach of the Dallas Cowboys, the Cowboys only managed to win two out of five playoff games. During the “Garrett Era”, the Cowboys would never experience a Divisional playoff game. The optimism under the new coaching leadership is at an all-time high. Mike McCarthy led the Green Bay Packers to ten playoff victories including a Superbowl victory in 2010. The combination between McCarthy and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore have Cowboys fans ecstatic of the possibilities for the young offense that appears to be loaded with talented skilled players. Last year, the NFL ranked the Cowboys #1 in overall offense. The Cowboys offense will look to improve their red zone scoring with an experienced veteran Head Coach, along with first round draft pick, CeeDee Lamb, the Oklahoma Sooners superstar wide receiver. This year, Cowboys fans anticipate bringing home their sixth Lombardi Trophy, an event that has not happened in nearly two decades. Success is right in front of them if they play up to their potential.
Despite endless potential for the offense, the Cowboys will require their defense to perform each week as well. The safety position has been an area of concern since last year. Long time captain Jeff Health departed Dallas and was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders. The Cowboys decided not to draft a safety and improve other positions in the 2020 NFL Draft. As a precaution, the Cowboys signed veteran Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix to a one-year $2.5 million guaranteed deal. However, after underperforming in training camp, the Cowboys decided to cut the safety just prior to the roster deadline. Second year safety Darian Thompson is expected to start alongside Xavier Woods for safeties on the defense. If weakness in the Cowboys secondary gets exposed in games, the front office will be forced to acquire new talent for the position. Cowboys fans all over, including me, have been begging the owner, Jerry Jones, to sign recently released FS Earl Thomas. Earl Thomas has been linked to the organization for years but there are no indications of an upcoming contract. However, there is still hope as Earl Thomas is providing Cowboys first choice and has yet to receive any other offers from other teams. So, there is always hope for a positive outcome.
